Dominica will have a geothermal plant by the end of 2023, so says Energy Minister Dr. Vince Henderson.
This he says has been a long-time goal of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) administration, as they continue to take the necessary steps to rebuild a modernized and resilient nation.
In answer to questions from the press, Dr. Henderson stated that despite the uncontrollable delays the project has met since its inception, he is confident that the completion date will be met.
“Five wells have already been drilled in the reservoir at the center of the project, among them, one production well and one re-injection well. The expected output from this well will be above 20 megawatts of electricity,” he stated.
“We have invested over 20 million dollars in the Roseau Valley, and we have also improved the roads to Laudat at a cost of 2.5 million dollars. We have drilling taking place in the Roseau Valley and have completed drilling in one Well…with excellent results so far, we have the temperature, the pressure, permeability and that should give us another 10 megawatts of power”.
According to Dr. Henderson, they now have the capacity to generate more power in the Roseau Valley that is needed in Dominica after the drilling of another Well in December 2022.
The site he said is being prepared with Ace Engineering as the contractor for 3 million US dollars and although they have some overruns the works should be completed in February and by March the drilling of the other Well should commence at a cost of US 16 million that is being funded 10 million grants from UK and 2 million from SISDOC and the additional funds from the World Bank.
He also stated that a power plant has to be constructed at a cost of (60 to 70 US) 160 to 190 million dollars and then the construction of new transmission lines which is a significant investment and funds have been allotted from the World Bank and the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) is being done and soon tendering will be out.
