Reflection For the Solemnity of Christ the King – November 24, 2024
We celebrate the last Sunday of the liturgical year. We recognize Jesus as King of the universe, ushering in God’s earthly kingdom rooted in love, justice, and community. Unlike the kings of earth, Jesus shows us God’s compassion.
Jesus is both a loving shepherd and a mighty king. He comes to rule with justice. Wherever people were found scattered, lost, or wounded, Jesus came with healing to bring them back to God. While Jesús’ kingdom is not of this world, we strive to build his kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
When Pilate asked Jesus if he was King of the Jews, Jesus responded that his kingdom was not of this world. Jesus referred to what he sees in this world, emphasizing power, prestige, and exclusiveness. The priority of God’s kingdom is to make the wounded whole and to open the eyes of the blind.
Christ the King comes to save the world, not to condemn it. Jesus comes as Lord of all creation who protects us with his outstretched arms. Day by day, we praise Jesus as our King. Christ the King is worthy to receive honor, glory, and praise.
When we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, we declare to the world and remind ourselves that Jesus is the Lord of the Church and the entire universe.
