Big Jeff arrested on alleged fraud charges

Popular calypsoion Jefferson “Big Jeff” Charles has been arrested and slapped with six (6) fraud-related charges and appeared before a Roseau Magistrate where the charges were read to him on Thursday, April 1, 2021.

According to the charges, Clartus Jefferson Charles of Sibouli Pointe Michel did “maliciously and for the purpose of deceit, uttered work permits number L.I.103/3-2001/2020 in the name of Richecard Henri and other Haitian national which were forged, knowing the same to be forged.

He is also charged for having in his custody forged work/residence permits approval letters in the name of Richecard, Lovely Camy both of Haiti without lawful excuse, knowing the same to have been forged.

Another of the charges is having forged Memorandum dated 15, February 2021 to the Comptroller of Inland Revenue (IRD) in the names of  Richecard, Lovely Camy both of Haiti without lawful excuse, knowing the same to have been forged.

The prosecuting team led by Inspector of Police Davidson Cadette did not object to bail after Joshua Francis lawyer for Charles made an application for bail on behalf of his client.

Inspector Cadette told the court, that among the conditions of bail, Charles was to surrender his travel documents (passport) and not apply for another, report to the Roseau Police Station every Wednesday’s between 7 am and 7 pm, should not interfere with witnesses, and should not have anyone do so on his behalf.

Presiding Magistrate Michael Laduat set bail at fifty thousand dollars with Ray Charles ( his brother) as surety.

He reminded him that “any breaches of his bail conditions can lead to it being revoked.”

The matter was set for August 30, 2021.
