UPDATE-Mother and son arrested and charged for illegal possession of ammunition without a license

Hazel Edwards and her 21-year-old son Zahrek Gonzalez-Peltier of 58- River Street Roseau have been arrested and charged with possession of 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition by the police.

Both appeared before Magistrate Pearl Williams where the charge was read to them, and they both elected for a summary trial in the magistrate’s court and pleaded “not guilty” when the charge was read to them.

On the issue of bail, Inspector Francis Laville who led the prosecution’s case in the matter referenced the Section 7 (1)  (d) of the Bail Act, “Bail shall be denied” where the defendant is charged with or convicted of an offense under the Firearms Act, 2011 punishable by a term of imprisonment of 5 years or more…the court shall not grant bail to that defendant unless it is satisfied that appropriate circumstances exist to justify the granting of bail.”

Attorney at law Jilane Prevost who represents both accused persons told the court that she has a fit and proper surety” who will testify that the defendants will meet all the appropriate circumstances referred to under subsection (1) of the Act,

As a result, Magistrate Pearl Williams said before bail is considered, she needs a “certificate of good character from the proposed surety Bobby Frederick. The matter was adjourned to October 20, 2022.

Meantime, both accused have finally been granted bail after spending one day on remand at the Stock Farm Prison. Bail was granted to each accused in the sum of $15,000.00.  

In other news from the Magistrate’s court, a Haitian-born national who resides in Elmshall Dominica Jonise Nicolas who was arrested and charged with one count of forgery was granted bail in the sum of ten thousand dollars. The forgery relates to a forged driver’s license that has been at the center of a police investigation resulting in several others being arrested and charged.

The matter was adjourned to February 9, 2023. She is represented by lawyer Kondwani Williams.

  1. It really is sickening how unjust the law system here is. We’re living in a time where you have to sleep with one eye open because people are becoming desperate. The majority of us will never be granted a gun license, so how are we to defend ourselves? The police force doesn’t even show up and by time they do, they’ll arrive to a lifeless body.
    The Haitian person was granted bail after forging documents… and our very own wasn’t?
    I think the Dominican police force and government are playing with a fire that burns hotter every day that passes. You let idiots play with fire, they’ll get burned.
