The government of Dominica has continued its distribution of payments to the people of Wesley/Woodford Hill who have been affected by the construction of the International Airport in that area.
In its quest to build the international airport, the government acquired a number of properties and as of this coming week, those who have presented their certificate of title have commenced receiving payments.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit disclosed that “those who have completed negotiations and have original copies of their certificate of title will start receiving payments.” A total of EC$15 million is expected to be paid out in the first set of disbursements.
“This is not the entire list, but 15 million dollars will be paid out to property owners this week and this is indeed good news for the many property owners who have been waiting for such to happen,” PM Skerrit stated.
He also took time to express “gratitude to them for being patient and understanding.”
The Dominican leader also revealed that the process of the disbursement of the funds is by no means over.
“That will now leave us with less than 15 million dollars outstanding to pay to property owners and we understand their anxiety when the monies were not forthcoming since people have their plans etc…but when dealing with such you have legal matters to deal with and to ensure that everything is done properly and correctly,” Skerrit stated.
It will cost Dominica about US$220 million for an international airport the prime minister has articulated in the past. The prime minister says that despite the government’s focus being shifted as a result of Hurricane Maria, the money set aside for the airport has “not been touched yet”.
He recently told the Dominica Parliament, that “this is the first government that has seriously pursued the international airport and EC$149,429,500 are in the account at the national bank. There is a standing order US$5 million each month,” he stated.
