Despite losing 3-2 to Bermuda in its second game in the Concacaf Nations League, captain of the team Glenson Prince had high praises for the players.
Dominica lost 6-1 to Bermuda in game one and in the second encounter they were down 2-0 at the half but the team fought back with an early second-half goal from Troy Jules and they got the equalizer from Odel Laville from the penalty spot.
For Captain Prince, despite not getting the three points, the players did justice to the game.
“We are disappointed that we did not win, but the effort that the guys put…I am so proud of the team. We were down 2 nil, the first being an unfortunate own goal and the second a potential foul that the referee ignored. But were not daunted because we were doing a lot of things right and so we regrouped at the half and went back with the same mentality and pulled one back and then the penalty,” Prince said.
“In the end, we fell short and after going down 6-1 in the first game to almost win this game you have to be proud three days after,” he said.
He continued, “The guys were extremely motivated to go out there and before the game, I told them we lost 6-1 in the first game and we have to do better in the second game so after the first loss, that must touch your pride and we have to show up and that is what they did, it’s just unfortunate that we were not able to get the win or at least a draw. We can leave Bermuda with our heads high for our performance not the result but the performance,” Captain Prince remarked.
He had high praise for a few members of the team. “Malaki who stepped in the absence of Briel in the midfield was outstanding, Ruffison and the entire defense, we almost got it right…our next objective is to remain in group B,” he said.
Also lauding the players for the spirited fight in game two was coach Ellington Sabin who said that they kept to the game plan and he was “proud” of them despite the loss.
“The guys put up a fight, not the results that we wanted but I am proud of the guys and their performance, it’s a far better result than 6-1 and so I want to thank the players for their fighting spirit in this game,” Coach Sabin stated.
He said, “The guys were determined not to have a repeat performance of Saturday evening and they played in unity and in line with the game plan. I want to congratulate the young players who stepped on, the team is filled with talent and experience. Despite the loss, we are not daunted we have another window in November with two games so all we need to do is to go out and get the necessary points to remain in league B so I am asking the Dominican public to continue believing in us and supporting us and as always whenever we step on the field, we want to represent them with pride and dignity,” he stated.
