GEORGETOWN, Guyana –CMC- A Guyanese and West Indies cricketer has allegedly been accused of raping a young woman two years ago,
According to reports in Guyana’s Kaieteur News, the alleged incident took place on March 3, 2023, at a residence in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The woman, who was 18 years old at the time of the incident, is said to have retained the services of law firm Hughes, Fields and Stoby to represent her in the matter.
According to the victim’s mother, they have refused attempts by the cricketer’s family to settle the matter privately.
She said that since the incident, her daughter had been suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts.
Furthermore, the victim’s mother has accused law enforcement of trying to cover up the incident, while insisting that there was substantial evidence, including phone records of calls made by the accused to the victim and eyewitnesses who reportedly saw them together on the day of the incident.
They claimed that the case file was reportedly submitted to the DPP in May 2023, but it wasn’t until October 3, 2023, that the family learned it had been returned with no charges recommended, and without any formal communication to the complainant or her family.
However, in December 2023, following a review by a new investigator, the family was informed that charges had finally been recommended.
At this time, though, the accused was allegedly out of the jurisdiction, and despite assurances that he would be arrested upon his return, no such action was taken.
By February 2024, the family was informed that the case file had been recalled by the DPP.
The family alleges that no clear explanation was given, and the current location of the file remains unknown, further fueling fears that the case may never see a courtroom.
The victim’s family also contends this is not the first time the accused has been implicated in a sexual assault allegation.
