National Security Minister Rayburn Blackmoore has warned persons holding illegal firearms and ammunition to surrender them before the end of the November 30, 2023 amnesty.
The government issued the gun and ammunition amnesty from October 1 to 31, 2023 but extended it to November 1 to 30, 2023 after only two illegal firearms were surrendered.
At a town hall meeting in the community of Bath Estate, Blackmoore explained that they have been trying to meet all the players in the community.
“We were in Grand Bay, now Bath Estate, we have also met with the various leaders in the communities…we have met with some persons we believe have influence on the block, and from that, we will have a committee and formulate an action plan that is responsive to the needs of the communities,” he said.
“I am calling on the young ladies who are the significant others of the young men, speak to them, because brothers and sisters, two things are going to happen if you continue to embark on this dangerous path, you either go to jail or you are dead.”
He told the meeting that the government has acted in “good faith” but at the end of the expiration date of the amnesty (November 30, 2023) they will be going to Parliament to “amend the gun laws.”
“If you make the irrational decision to keep your illegal firearm and you are caught with an illegal firearm, you will go to jail for a very long time and God forbids that you use it to commit a crime, then your keys are going to be lost,” Blackmoore stated.
