Streak, written and directed by the legendary Dominican playwright and theatre great, Dr. Alwin Bully, was first staged in Dominica at St. Gerard’s Hall, Roseau, in 1975, before touring in other locations across the region, including St. Lucia and Barbados.
The play, which was the first major production written and directed by Dr. Bully and staged by his theatrical group, the People’s Action Theatre (PAT), would go on to form part of the long list of theatrical accomplishments by Dr. Bully and his illustrious group over several decades. Streak is a social commentary that deals with some of the major events of 1974 in Dominica and is a recording of the various positions held by different Dominicans during that period.
Like most of Bully’s works during that period, it demonstrates his ability to not only relate to the social issues of his times but to use his creativity and skills to evoke deep passion, analyze social and political situations, and to have audiences captivated by his masterful
theatre craft. The play, set in the mid-1970’s Dominica is a romantic comedy based on some of the major social issues of the times and audiences with a compelling way to respond through laughter and with great joy.
The Golden anniversary stagings of Streak will be produced by the Alwin Bully Foundation (ABF), La Cour Des Artes de la Dominica, and Kaz Kweyol Productions. The play will be directed by PAT and ABF member, Severin McKenzie, and supported by Curtis Clarendon of La Cour des Art, with Mrs. Anita Bully and Ms. Gloria Augustus serving as its
executive producers. The rest of the technical team will be made up of persons coming from these organizations, bringing together many persons of long-standing in the Dominica theatre and cultural scene.
In preparation for the staging of the play, the producers are issuing a special call for persons interested in being cast for roles in this major theatrical production. Interested persons wishing to be part of the cast should contact the Alwin Bully Foundation Inc. or La Cour Des Arts De La Dominique Inc.
Streak promises to be an inspiring showcase of talent, featuring a captivating blend of drama, music, and dance that reflects the rich tapestry of Dominican culture.
