Arthur Smith the former General Secretary and President of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) has died.
Smith, regarded as a “union stalwart” in Dominica served also as Labour Commissioner in Dominica before he retired from the Public Service. He then moved on to the National Co-operative Credit Union (NCCU), where he worked advising the Credit Union on Labour Laws for several years.
Speaking to Nature Isle News (NIN) in an exclusive interview, Thomas Letang regarded Arthur Smith as “a very hard negotiator who would not give up easily and held his position strongly”.
“When he was negotiating he was like a rock,” Letang stated.
According to him, Arthur Smith is the only person who has served as General Secretary and President of the union then known as the Dominica Civil Service Association (CSA).
“He then worked as a Field Officer with the Union and, when Charles Savarin resigned as General Secretary of the Union to take up a government post in the Dame Eugenia Charles government, Arthur Smith succeeded him as General Secretary serving in that capacity for about seven years,” Letang recounted.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and are very grateful for what he has done for the Union in Dominica and pray that God will give his family the strength to move on. May his Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.”
Thank you for service, sir.
The political opposition has lost a comrade and Dominica has lost a hardworking son.
Condolences to his loved ones.
