5 am Situation Update – 3rd October 2023
The intensity of the rainfall experienced yesterday evening subsided overnight, but the rainfall continued.
Flash flooding was reported in several parts of the island resulting in some areas temporarily impassable given the rise in water level.
By midnight, preliminary assessments indicated that roads were passable with some standing water along the road network. There were no reports of any major slides which would impede the flow of traffic.
Meanwhile, the rainfall has been continuous. Radar and satellite imagery show an area of cloudiness, showers, and thunderstorms over the island. Rainfall gauges islandwide have received up to 6 inches from yesterday evening to this morning, Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
Despite the center of the storm now some 200 miles away from Dominica, model projection still suggests that the island could receive additional amounts of rainfall (up to 3 inches) today.
Given the already saturated nature of the soils and the projected rainfall for today, it may be necessary to suspend schools to reduce any risk for children expected to traverse the roads. However, business days should continue as normal.
