..TROPICAL STORM WATCH ISSUED FOR DOMINICA… Issued 5:00 PM on Wednesday 18th October 2023
As of 5 PM A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for Dominica. A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.
At 5 PM, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) upgraded an area of low pressure located about 625 miles east of the Windward islands to Tropical Storm Tammy.
Tammy is moving quickly westward or west-northwards toward the Lesser Antilles. Model guidance suggests that Tammy could begin impacting the Lesser Antilles on Friday 20th October from midday into Saturday 21st October 2023 during the evening.
POSSIBLE CONDITIONS:
● Tropical storm force winds from Friday of winds 40mph with higher gusts;
● An increase in showers and thunderstorm activity from Friday which could result in widespread flooding, possibly 50 to 100 mm/ 2 to 4 inches of rainfall or greater in higher elevation of possibly 6 inches;
● Deterioration in sea conditions from Thursday night, with waves to 3.0 m/ 10.0 ft and peaking to 4m or 12.0 ft on Friday night.
POSSIBLE IMPACTS:
● Rivers, streams, gutters, and ravines will likely overflow their banks and flood surrounding areas;
● Landslides and rock falls from overhanging cliffs;
● Loose objects can become missiles in gusty winds;
● People living near the coast will be impacted.
Residents should continue to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Tammy and ensure that they have their hurricane season plans finalized and ready for activation to protect life, property, and livelihood.
