Police have arrested and charged Niam Alexander St. Rose of Everton Estate Loubiere for the murder of 18-month-old Yolana A’Marah Julie St. Jean of Fond Cole.
St. Rose appeared before Magistrate Michael Laudat on January 22, 2024, where the charge was read to him.
Murder accused Niam Alexander St. Rose (left) is handcuffed with another prisoner being led away.
The charge is that on January 12, 2024, he did murder Yolana A’Marah Julie St. Jean of Fond Cole contrary to law. He was not required to enter a plea since murder is a capital offense and is tried at the high court by a Judge and jury.
Legal counsel did not represent him but told the court that his lawyer was David Bruney. The prosecution objected to bail stating that under the Bail Act, he was “not entitled to bail as a right” given the offense committed. However, St. Rose told the court, that he was “innocent and should be granted bail.”
His request for bail was denied and he is now on remand at the State’s Prison in Stock Farm pending the preliminary inquiry into the matter on July 8, 2024. The court also ordered disclosure to him on or before June 8, 2024.
The Magistrate also called on the prosecution to expedite the matter since it is of great public interest. “The public wants justice, a lot of senseless killing and violence in the country, and the court cannot turn a blind eye to that,” the Magistrate stated.
He also called on the prosecution to have the matter ready for trial in the shortest possible time.
