Police have arrested and charged Anthony Roberts of Mahaut with two counts of drug trafficking.

Roberts appeared in court and elected for a high court trial since the matter can be dealt with at the Magistrate’s court or the Hig Court before a Judge and jury.

He is charged with trafficking 16,798 grams of cannabis and 696,360 grams of cocaine on April 12, 2024. The incident is said to have taken place in Castle Bruce.

In pleading with the court to grant his client bail, Wayne Norde told the court that his client had ” a fixed place of abode, is a farmer by profession, and was willing to adhere to any conditions set by the court.

“He is not a threat to the community and the alleged offense is insufficient to deny him bail…which should be granted with or without conditions,” he said.

Norde also told the court that while the offense was “serious” he didn’t think it was “serious enough not to grant bail”

But in his response, Police prosecutor Sgt Vivian Augustine told the court that although the prosecution was “not objecting to bail” if the court was minded to grant bail the court should take note of the Bail Act sections 6 & 7.

The court then ruled that it was “satisfied that Roberts had met the requirements for bail” and granted him bail but with a proper surety.

Roberts was not able to immediately secure someone to secure bail for him and he has been remanded at the State’s prison until he finds a suitable surety. His matter was adjourned to September 13, 2024, in Castle Bruce.

The estimated street value of the cocaine is EC$18,801,720.00 and the estimated street value of the cannabis seized is EC$74,000.00.
