Sye receives a pre-action protocol letter from DPP

Calypsoian Murphy “Sye” Jno Jules has received a pre-action protocol letter from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Sherma Dalrymple for his 2024 calypso.

“Take Your Foot Gangster Gun Slinger” is the song at the heart of the dispute in which the DPP claimed that she was “defamed.”

The letter claimed that the song had done “irreparable damage to the reputation of Ms. Dalrymple who holds an esteemed office in Dominica and who carries out her duties professionally and with diligence and fairness.”

“Your statements have imputed improper motives to our client personally and professionally and have brought disrepute both to her character and the office of DPP which she now holds.”

The letter also reminds him that as a police officer, he holds the rank of “inspector of police” and the said statements by him may be given “undue weight and credibility and this is also further buttressed by the fact that you performed the song dressed on some occasions in your police uniform.”

“We are therefore calling upon you to immediately render a public apology to our client in words suitable to our client and to immediately excise the said statements as set out from any further performance of your song.”

He is further as to “desist from any further performance of this song until you render a public apology.” She is also asking for a compensation.

“We believe that this matter can be amicably resolved both in the interest of the art form and in the interest of our client. We expect to hear from you by February 8, 2024, failing which our client will be forced to institute legal proceedings against you and seek redress in court.”

The letter was sent to DBS, Kairi FM, Q95 radio the Chief of Police, and the President of the Dominica Calypso Association.

  1. I like the song. I also find Sye a level-headed fellow. However, Madam DPP, I am with you on this 200%. Why? It is another step towards arresting and reversing the cancer of disinformation that is wreaking havoc in Dominica. Too many fools think that they have the unfettered right to run their mouths and say anything. Freedom of speech is not so free. May you be victorious in this. Do not relent!

  2. “Too many fools think that they have the unfettered right to run their mouths and say anything”

Every single Dominican has the right to free speech – PERIOD. You taking public facing job , doing your comess and showing thugs they can kill a man and get away with it… but then you’re upset when the public calls you out?

Stop let them totalitarian vibes make itself comfotable in DA

    • I agree with you! She is one of those in high offices who contributes to Dominica’s lawlessness because of their “wanting to save faces and be liked”. This may just play out like Checko when he was sued for his song with lyrics about an “Ambassador A” a few years ago. As Lucius Seneca once said “every guilty person is his own hangman.”

      • “This may just play out like Checko when he was sued for his song with lyrics about an “Ambassador A” a few years ago.” Lol, I guess you do not know how that lawsuit ended, right? Heheheh! Go ask Checko.

  3. Miss DPP put your efforts into doing Dominica’s work in the judiciary and not to stifle free speech and cultural expression. Unfortunately for you this is damaging your reputation way more than the truth in Sye’s song. You are a public official and you will come up for ridicule from time to time, every other public official does. Who do you think you are?
