Handover Ceremony of Forty-Two Homes under the Housing Recovery Project

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development cordially invites members of the media to the handover ceremony of forty-two homes under the Housing Recovery Project, with 15 of the beneficiaries hailing from the Kalinago Territory. The ceremony will take place on Monday, March 18, 2023, at the State House Conference Centre at 2 p.m.  This marks the fifth such ceremony, highlighting the ongoing commitment to rebuilding and resilience in the housing sector of Dominica.

The Housing Recovery Project, implemented through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development with commencement of operations in 2019, has been instrumental in providing resilient housing to households whose homes were completely destroyed by the effects of Hurricane Maria in 2017. The HRP currently stands as a flagship disaster resilience and sustainable housing solution to vulnerable families. Since its inception, the project has demonstrated a commitment to rebuilding homes and lives, and enhancing resilience in the face of adversity.

With a track record of delivering tangible results, the Housing Recovery Project has already handed over 189 homes between December 2021 and 2023. Notably, the last handover of 73 homes took place in December 2023, marking a significant milestone in the project’s progress.  Moreover, through restructuring efforts and improved efficiency measures in 2023, the Housing Recovery Project has made remarkable strides, including the doubling of construction starts to re-house vulnerable families. These efforts underscore the project’s dedication to addressing housing needs, and the well-being and quality of life of households across Dominica in a more strategic and timely manner.

We invite members of the media to join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of the Housing Recovery Project and witness the transformative impact it has had on the lives of beneficiaries. Your presence at the handover ceremony will not only honor the resilience of those who have overcome adversity but also highlight the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and its partners in building a stronger, more resilient community.
