Not even a brief intervention by Opposition Senator Sean Douglas questioning the eligibility of the Government’s nominee Sylvanie Burton for the post of President of Dominica could have stopped the process as Prime Minister Roosevelt responded by asking Senator Douglas to do some research since the nominee of the Opposition Anete Sanford was in breach of certain sections of the Constitution.
President-Elect Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton will be sworn into office on Monday, October 2, 2023, by a High Court Judge and, by so doing will become the first female Head of State in Dominica and also the first Kalinagoo.
Via secret ballots, Sylvanie Burton polled 20 votes to Sanford’s 5 ( the Ayes have it) and will replace Charles Savarin who demits office on Sunday, October 1, 2023, and two consecutive teams in office (ten years).
Parliament was delayed for close to an hour and when it commenced, House Speaker Joseph Isaac apologized for the delay but explained that he had to deal with matters of the legality of the government’s nominee that he was aware was an issue for the opposition.
