The High Court has sentenced former St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party candidate and medical practitioner Dr. Vance Gilbert to 12½ years’ imprisonment for rape and five years for indecent assault following his conviction.
The court ordered that the prison terms run concurrently, meaning the sentences will be served at the same time. A $9,000 fine was also imposed.
The sentencing follows lengthy High Court proceedings in the matter of Director of Public Prosecutions v. Vance Gilbert.
Gilbert, who previously contested Constituency No. 7 for the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, had maintained his innocence following the guilty verdict. He retains the right to pursue any appeal available to him under the law.
