National Security Minister Blackmoore, issues yet another stern warning to drug dealers and those with illegal firearms

National Security Minister Rayburn Blackmoore has issued yet another warning to those involved in the drug trade and also having illegal firearms that his Ministry is working hand in hand with the police and customs to deal with them.

His latest comments came after the country experienced two latest firebombings of vehicles and also a number of gun-related offenses so far for the year.

“For those in this country who believe that they can impose fear among the public and believe that they are big bow- tier…you can kill when you want and firebomb when you want, tell them they will not be allowed Mr. Speaker to create an environment of fear in this country,” Blackmoore told Parliament as he spoke on the 2023/24 National Budget.

He continued, “They will not be allowed Mr. Speaker as simple as that and one day the arm of the law will confront them, and going forward Mr. Speaker, we shall put other systems in place, we have a few challenges with the illicit trafficking of firearms but I want to take this opportunity to commend the police and Customs Officers who are at the forefront.”

“The police alone (I am not yet even speaking about the Customs) have recovered 177 illegal guns Mr. Speaker from 2020 and during that same period, Mr. Speaker 6,142 rounds of ammunition were seized so that tells you the magnitude of the problem that confronts us. 112 people have been arrested and charged with 96 being male and 16 being female,” stated.

“During this same period Mr. Speaker, 25 people have been convicted and a fine of $271,000 has been imposed Mr. Speaker by the courts. We have started and the Prime Minister is leading from the front to look at all the elements involved in the illicit trafficking of firearms we shall be bringing all the law enforcement agencies together (Customs, Police, and FIU-Financial Intelligence Unit) to look at the origin not only of firearms but the components of the firearms. Because for this trade to continue, it has to be facilitated and so we shall be going after everyone who is involved in that trade Mr. Speaker, no stones shall be left unturned in our efforts to raid the streets of illegal firearms,” the National Security Minister remarked.

After the approval of the 2023/24 National Budget, Parliament was adjourned sine die.
