Loreen Bannis-Roberts appointed Dominica’s Permanent Representative to the United Kingdom

ROSEAU, DOMINICA-Three years after Loreen Bannis-Roberts was embroiled in a controversy as United Nations (UN) Ambassador when she signed on behalf of Dominica establishing diplomatic relations between Dominica and Syria, which subsequently led to her resignation, she has now been appointed Dominica’s Permanent Representative to the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said then that after discussions with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senior Government officials and lawyers, he immediately summoned a meeting with Bannis-Roberts at his office in person on March 17, 2022, and “as a result, she has tendered her resignation from the post which he has accepted…”

At a press conference today, August 28, 2025, Prime Minister Skerrit disclosed that the necessary instrument has been granted by Her Excellency President Sylvina Burton, and Her Excellency Loreen Bannis-Roberts will, in “due time, present her credentials to King Charles.”

He stated that he was “very confident in the abilities of Bannis-Roberts and was extremely happy to engage her, and is confident that she will represent Dominica and the Dominican public well in London.”

Bannis-Roberts was from August 2016, Dominica’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, the first woman to hold the post.

In 2000, as a member of the Dominica Labour Party, she was elected Parliamentary Representative of the Castle Bruce Constituency, a post she held until 2009. During this period, she served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education (2000–2005), Minister of State at the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Private Sector Relations (2005–2007), and Minister for Community Development, Culture, Gender Affairs and Information (2007–2009). On two occasions, she also served as Acting Prime Minister.

Loreen Bannis-Roberts is married and has three children
