PRESS RELEASE
Clement Richards announces the release of his debut novel, Indian Warner: Son of Two Worlds, a historical narrative on the life and times of Thomas “Indian” Warner.
He was a towering historical figure born of a Kalinago mother and an English father, whose life unfolded at the crossroads of empire, identity, and survival. Set against the mountains and rivers of Waitukubuli (Dominica) and the then-contested waters of the Eastern Caribbean, the novel blends incisive description with chronicle‐like detail.
Richards’ prose restores dignity to voices too often neglected in the records of empire, tracing Warner’s efforts to navigate between worlds — and the betrayal that led to his death. “In the end, it was not the empire’s cannon that claimed him, but blood — the hand of his own brother”, states the novel.
Indian Warner: Son of Two Worlds offers historical resonance for contemporary readers, highlighting Kalinago resilience, colonial negotiation, and the politics of neutrality.
The book traces the life of Indian Warner from his birth and early development in St. Kitts; his escape to Dominica in his teen years; his accession to Chief of the Kalinago tribe of Waitukubuli in 1667; and his subsequent murder at the hands of his brother, Philip Warner. This narrative unfolds against an intimate portrait of the life and outlook of the Kalinago people in Dominica and underscores their opposition to the colonial invaders who were intent on stealing their lands.
The story also highlights the genocide that took place after Indian Warner was brutally murdered, which led to the naming of the general location as Massacre (or Massac in Creole), which literally means carnage or bloodbath in English.
Clement Richards is a Caribbean cultural activist, content producer, and writer whose work bridges history, memory, and literature. Imbued from an early age with a fascination for the past, his writing seeks to uncover overlooked figures and stories that have shaped the cultural identity of the region.
He draws much of his inspiration from the rich history of Dominica (Waitukubuli), especially the enduring legacy of the Kalinago people, whose strength and resilience still echo through the island’s landscape and living oral traditions.
His debut novel, Indian Warner: Son of Two Worlds, is both a work of historical imagination and an examination of the concept of belonging. This work reanimates the life of Sir Thomas Warner, the person who actually started the process of English colonization of the Caribbean on St. Kitts in the 17th century, and that of Barbe, a Kalinago woman from Dominica who was the mother of Indian Warner.
Through illustrative prose and chronicle‐like detail, Richards’ writing offers more than storytelling: it is an act of remembrance, restoring dignity to those too often left at the margins of colonial records. He hopes his work will speak to Caribbean readers as an affirmation of cultural memory, while offering global readers a deeper understanding of the histories that continue to shape Caribbean development.
“Indian Warner’s story creates an intricate narrative that connects Saint Kitts, Dominica, Martinique, and Antigua, in a plot that rivals even the biggest Hollywood blockbusters”, states another quote from the novel.
The book will be available in paperback for purchase from Amazon on October 23, 2025, followed by the audiobook on October 31, while the eBook version will be released on November 7, 2025. The audiobook version is narrated by former Chief Cultural Officer and Dominican personality, Raymond Lawrence.
