Hector John is the new UWP Deputy Political leader

Seasoned politician Hector John, who is a former Opposition leader in the Dominica Parliament and former Member of Parliament for the Salisbury constituency, is the new Deputy Political Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP).

John was the Leader of the Opposition from 2010 to 2014 and was the youngest ever to hold that position. He was first elected as a Representative to the House of Assembly in 2009.

That announcement was made by the leader of the UWP, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, at a UWP press conference at the Garraway Hotel on June 3, 2025.

Hector John replaces Senator Delbert Paris, who was elected at the party’s delegates convention in December 2024 but resigned in April 2025 over differences with the leader, Dr. Fontaine, over his decision to support the government in the March 19, 2025, debate of the Electoral Registration Act in the Dominica Parliament.

John graduated from the St. Joseph Campus of Dominica Grammar School and then earned a B.A. in Information Technology from Monroe College in New York.

He worked in the banana industry for over 16 years, as a statistics officer and information technology assistant, and was active in the Salisbury community as a leader of several organizations, including the Salisbury Catholic Youth Movement and the Salisbury Improvement Committee.

The UWP also announced that former Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the party, Glenroy Cuffy, who contested the Roseau Central seat on a UWP ticket and lost, has been re-elected to that post, replacing Sherline Sabaroche, who resigned.
