Complete lockdown this weekend and Curfew extended until August 23

The Government of Dominica has taken a decision to extend the Emergency Powers Curfew Order of 2021 which governs the curfew put in place due to the Covid-19 surge for another week.

The Curfew Order was to have ended on August 17, 2021, but in a brief address to the nation, acting Cabinet Secretary, Careen Prevost stated that Cabinet has taken a decision to extend the Order until August 23, 2021.

“Cabinet has taken a decision to extend the Emergency Powers Curfew Order of 2021 for a further 7 days until Monday, August 23rd at 5:00 AM,” she said.

“As you are already aware, a person shall not be out in public between the hours of 5:00 AM and 6:00 PM on Monday to Friday except to provide or to access essential services.”

According to her, the list of essential services that can be accessed during the week has been clearly defined in the SRO published previously.

Prevost stated further that Cabinet has taken a decision that for this weekend, there will be “a complete lockdown from Friday, August 20th, at 6:00 PM to Monday, August 23rd, at 5:00 AM.”

“This lockdown is specifically to allow for our frontline workers who have been at this fight from day one to rest and spend time with their families…many of us may not understand the immense pressure, long hours, and commitment required from our frontline workers at this time,” she stated.

She continued, “If you would like to do something for them as a token of appreciation for their hard work and effort, please stay home.”

Prevost thanked the frontline workers for their contribution to this battle.

She also urged all Dominicans to lend their support by following the necessary protocols and “stay at home.”
