A new jetty, valued at EC$4,075,350, will soon be constructed at Anse de Mai.
The Government of Dominica on Friday, May 2, 2025, signed a contract with local firm Offshore Civil & Marine Inc. for the construction of the new facility.
The project aims to improve maritime safety and operational capacity at the port. In addition, it will stimulate economic activity, enhance disaster preparedness, and provide support to the community’s fisheries and tourism sectors.
The existing jetty will be demolished, and a new 65-metre-long reinforced concrete deck supported by 26 tubular steel piles will be constructed. The new jetty will also be outfitted with potable water infrastructure, lighting for night-time operations, and essential docking equipment such as fenders, bollards, and ladders.
Once completed, the upgraded facility will enhance the operations of the local fisheries sector by providing safer and more reliable docking for fishers and is expected to drive community and economic development. It will also serve as a reliable access point for the delivery of emergency supplies and support evacuation efforts in the aftermath of storms or hurricanes.
“This jetty is about creating opportunity. It will bring new jobs, from construction to tourism to small business ventures. It will empower our vendors, our youth, and our artisans. It will revitalize our community life and spark economic activity that ripples into every home, every classroom, every household,” said Parliamentary Representative for the Paix Bouche Constituency, Hon. Lakeyia Joseph.
“To our children—imagine the possibilities. Imagine being able to walk down to the port and see boats coming in, not just with fish, but with ideas, with tourists, with opportunity. Imagine being able to dream of being a tour operator, a marine officer, a business owner, right here, in your home village. You don’t have to leave to make it. Your future is being built right here,” she declared.
The Government of Dominica says the construction of the Jetty is another demonstration of its commitment to uplifting rural communities and promoting climate-resilient, inclusive development.
