Dominica welcomes Cuban medical professionals

PRESS RELEASE

On Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, 2024, the Government of Dominica, through the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Social Services, welcomed seventeen (17) new Cuban health collaborators who will play an intricate role in the nation’s healthcare system. This group of medical professionals will bolster the existing healthcare services across the island, enhancing our capacity to provide high-quality medical care to the people of Dominica.
The arrival of these health collaborators marks the continuation of the longstanding partnership between Dominica and Cuba, underscoring the shared commitment of both nations to improving public health and well-being. The team comprises specialists in various medical fields including general practitioners, intensive care physicians and nurses, specialized nurses in neonatology and midwifery, radiographers, sonographers, and laboratory technicians.

The delegation was received by the new Cuban Ambassador to the Commonwealth of Dominica, Ambassador Miguel Manuel Fraga Gonzalez; Minister of Health, Wellness, and Social Services, Cassanni Laville; Official in Charge of the Cuban Consul in Dominica, Ahmed Pomar Arechavaleta; and leader of the Cuban Medical Brigade, Dr Francisco Sanchez Martinez, along with other staff of the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services.
Laville expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Cuban government. “The arrival of these dedicated health professionals is a testament to the strong bilateral relations between Dominica and Cuba. Their expertise will be invaluable in strengthening our healthcare system, especially in areas where specialized skills are most needed,” he noted.
In addition to providing immediate medical services, the Cuban health collaborators will engage in training and knowledge exchange with local healthcare workers, fostering a collaborative environment that aims to elevate the overall standard of healthcare in Dominica.
Dr. Sanchez, who has led the Cuban medical delegation for several years, stated, “We are honoured to be here in Dominica, and this new team is looking forward to working closely with our Dominican colleagues. Our mission is to provide comprehensive medical care and support, ensuring that all citizens have access to quality healthcare services.”
The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Social Services, and by extension the Government of Dominica, extends a warm welcome to the Cuban health collaborators and is confident that their presence will continue to significantly impact the health sector, as it has done throughout the years. This collaboration highlights the importance of international solidarity and cooperation in addressing global health challenges.
An official welcome ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 28, 2024, at the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital.
