It was a day of joy for the family friends and well-wishers who gathered at the High Court in Roseau to witness the admittance of Juliette Theresa Theophile, Diane Royette Ettiene, Destiny Denisha Pascal, and Police Officer Allen Edwin Alexander as barristers and solicitors of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.
The ceremony took place before Justices Richard Floyd and Jacqueline Josiah Graham.
Lennox Lawrence moved the application on behalf of Theophile and Ettiene impressing on the court that both had “excelled” and had met all the requirements and were “fit and proper persons” to be admitted as lawyers in Dominica.
The court was told that Theophile had a difficult journey during her time studying, suffered “financial hardships, and had lost loved ones.”
Joshua Francis was also part of the function and supported the application of Destiny Pascal who works in his chambers.
The new lawyers were all described as “hardworking, dedicated and committed professionals” who will make a serious change to the practice of law.
In his address to the new lawyers, Justice Floyd stated that it was always a wonderful feeling when that day finally comes, and you are being called to the Bar. “I was there over 36 years ago; I call on you to take pride in all your achievements, it’s been a long journey to reach where you are now with much hard work,” Justice Floyd stated.
“You are to treat your position with respect, be true to your oath, without fair or favour, the world now more than ever needs lawyers,” he said.
He also reminded them that their community will be looking towards them for support so don’t disappoint them. He also called on them to “uphold the standards of the ancient and noble profession.”
“Speak the truth, maintain pride in the justice system…don’t be afraid to seek advice from your colleagues, and never think that you know it all,” he stated.
His Sister Justice Jacqueline Josiah Graham also had strong words of advice and admonition for them calling on them to continue to work hard. “Be honest, truthful, and exhibit integrity and loyalty to clients and the court.”
