The Media fraternity in Dominica and the rest of the region is mourning the loss of veteran Grenadian Journalsi Odette Campbell who died on May 2, 2023, in her native Grenada.
In a statement, Greanda’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell expressed “shock and sadness” at her passing. She was the Managing Director of the Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN).
Campbell he said was “a well-respected journalist with a strong work ethic and a sincere passion for her craft. Her impact on Grenada’s media industry will long be remembered, touching the lives of journalists and viewers for over 30 years in the industry.”
As a former lecturer at the T A Marryshow Community College, where she taught Media Management and other courses in the Associate Degree in Media Studies programme, Campbell used her knowledge and experience to train and upgrade younger colleagues in the field. Her efforts sought to ensure that all media practitioners were trained and certified, a step she saw as the main foundation in raising the bar of the local media fraternity.
“On behalf of the Government of Grenada, I extend condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mrs Odette Campbell for this grave loss. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” Prime Minister Mitchell said upon receiving the sad news.
Campbell was a mentor and friend to many, and she will be greatly missed. The Media Workers Association of Grenada also offered this statement at her passing.

It is a great loss to the Grenada Broadcasting Network and the entire media industry. As a media worker, Campbell played a crucial role in informing the public and shaping public opinion spanning 3 decades. She was dedicated to her profession and was highly respected by her colleagues.
Campbell’s contributions to the Grenada Broadcasting Network will never be forgotten. She brought a unique perspective and a wealth of experience to her work, and her presence will be deeply missed. Campbell was not only a respected media worker but also a kind and generous person. She had a positive impact on everyone she worked with, and her loss is deeply felt by us all. Campbell’s legacy will live on through her work, and she will always be remembered as a valued member of the media community.

In Dominica, Broadcaster/Journalist Matt Peltier who had a long association over the years with Campbell describes her as “a professional with a deep passion for the job.”
“She was fearless and professional, she always looked out for up-and-coming journalists and was never too busy to lend some sound advice…I always admired her skills and dedication to the profession,” Peltier said.

Who was Odette Campbell?
Odette Campbell has worked closely with PMA for many years to defend public media standards throughout the world. She was a long-time media manager.
Odette holds degrees in international journalism from Sussex University, marketing from St. George’s University, and business law, labor law, and supervisory management from the University of the West Indies.
Odette has over 30 years of expertise in media production and journalism, which she draws on in her job as managing director. Previous positions held by the author include Communications Specialist at Grenada’s National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and News Director for GBN.
