THIRTY-YEAR-OLD Alleyne Esprit of Salisbury now has time to reflect on his actions while an inmate at the Dominica State Prison for the next 18 months.
Esprit who appeared before Magistrate Michael Laudat on February 22, 2022, pleaded to the charge of theft.
According to the facts, on February 21, 2022, between 12noon and 1:30 pm the defendant entered the SMart supermarket and was immediately placed under surveillance. He was armed with a bag and collected a few items and placed them in the bag and then went past the cashier but was stopped by the security who had kept a close eye on him while at the store.
He was asked to open his bag and when he did two bottles of Hennessy, two M&M, two skittles, one pork luncheon meat, one chicken luncheon meat, one BBQ paste, and a piece of cheese were found in his possession. The Cheese was in his underwear.
The police were called and he was arrested and charged for theft. Esprit told the court that he is a working man and was the father of two young children. In response, he was told by the court that he was not learning since he just come from jail a few weeks ago.
“You are not learning, you just cannot walk into a store and steal the people’s items like they are yours, you failed to be a role model for your young children…you need to learn,” Magistrate Laudat told him.
He admitted to the various offence when shown his fact sheet and was told that three different Magistrates sentence him and he just did not take heed.
“You are hereby sentenced to 18 months in jail,” the magistrate stated. The costs of the stolen items according to a bail presented by SMart the items totaled $436.60. The maximum sentence is seven (7) years in jail for theft.
