Veteran lawyer and broadcaster dies

The legal fraternity in Dominica has been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran lawyer and broadcaster Michael “Mikey” Bruney.

According to reports reaching Nature Isle News (NIN) Bruney died at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) after a brief battle with cancer. He was 62 years old.

At the time of his death, he was a sitting magistrate in Dominica and was also in private practice. Bruney worked in the government service for many years and was also the registrar of the high court.

Before venturing into law, Bruney worked as a broadcaster and many remember his voice covering general election results in Dominica his last assignment being the 2019 general elections.

Broadcaster Ken Richards is a personal and close friend of Michael Bruney describes him as “the consummate humanitarian” who didn’t suffer fools gladly but was always helping people.

“He was my bigger brother, adviser, best friend ever, liming partner, and just a good human being. He remained disappointed with me in one specific area. He made several attempts to get me to return to Dominica to help him set up his radio media dream. I was never quite ready, and I failed in that. Mikey trusted me, and I trusted him,” he said.

He continued, “He was always a beacon of light during my worst days and the real Solomon when I needed advice.

“To say I will miss him is a gross understatement. Condolence to his two sons Keron in St. Lucia and Ken, Also his ex-wife Kadie, all his siblings, and the rest of the extended family. He was just a gem and an accomplished professional in both the judiciary and the media. I am very sad but have a wealth of memories to rely on.”

Alvin Knight who also worked with “Mikey” as he was called described him as “a consummate broadcaster” who thought of every word before speaking.

“He was always thinking, thinking and thinking…a very good friend who loved and lived life to the fullest. A nice person who gave his advice freely, he will be missed dearly,” Knight stated.
