Roseau, Dominica: March 20, 2023 — Local development NGO, CultureMedia Services Inc. directed by Sobers Esprit and Gregory Rabess joins forces with the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Fund (GEF-SGP) in the roll-out of a social media campaign, starting April 20th, 2023, to bring awareness to various environmental and climate-related issues impacting Dominica and the region.
The social media campaign which will use a mix of media platforms including Facebook, Tik Tok, and Instagram will highlight issues related to several themes as they impact Dominica’s environment. The campaign’s main themes include poor waste disposal methods, poor agricultural practices, marine pollution, and poor land use protection and how these manifestly impact the country’s ability to build a sustainable and secure future and provide for its people and country.Â
The media campaign will make use of local languages such as Dominican English, Kwéyòl, Kokoy, and Kalinago. The local language focus is to ensure that the messages have greater public appeal and understanding and hope to draw their attention to the severe consequences of negative actions to the country’s ecosystem and fragile environment. The hope is for greater enlightenment and for community-based action to minimize these impacts and to build resilience for a secure future for Dominica.Â
The social media campaign is part of an ongoing programme being implemented by CultureMedia Services Inc and funded by the GEF-SGF to provide increased information on the work of the GEF-SGP in Dominica and to increase environmental education and awareness for community action. Thus far, the programme has delivered a series of capacity-building exercises for grass-root organizations through webinars, media, and communication training, and a performing arts workshop for young people. The current phase of the programme involves the production of various media products including four videos featuring organizations involved in environmental action across Dominica, four thematic public service announcements, and two billboards to highlight major thematic issues of concern to the local population.
The public can follow the campaign on Culture Media Services Inc. on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
