Is Dr. Thomson Fontaine to replace Lennox Linton as leader of UWP?

Word on the ground is that former United Workers Party (UWP) Senator Dr. Thomson Fontaine will be leading the United Workers Party in the next general elections in Dominica whenever it is called.

Linton, the present leader of the party led them into two failed elections and after the last general elections in 2019 submitted his resignation but it was rejected.

In December 2021 at the party’s annual delegates conference, Linton was re-elected unopposed as the political leader of the UWP. The new deputy leader is Francesca Joseph who contested the La Plaine constituency for the UWP in the last general election and is now a senator in the parliamentary opposition.

Former UWP Senator Isaac Baptiste was also re-elected unopposed, as President while Ezekiel Bazil has succeeded Hector John as Vice President of the party.

Glenroy “Soso” Cuffy is the new Public Relations Officer and Nicholas George retained his position unopposed, as General Secretary; Ernie John-Finn was elected as Assistant General Secretary, and Dr. McDonald Thomas AKA T.C, is the new International Secretary.

Other members of the UWP executive are Alex Birmingham who held on to the position of Treasurer without opposition while Kent Joseph was voted Assistant Treasurer.

The party’s Trustees continue to be Edison James, Norris Prevost, and Ron green.

The top executive of the party is tight-lipped about the matter, but Nature Isle News (NIN) can confirm that a meeting was held over the May Day weekend with Dr. Fontaine to further discuss the matter.

Speaking to NIN under strict conditions of anonymity someone with knowledge of the situation revealed that Dr. Fontaine has “the full support of Linton and other members of the executive.”

“He is putting the necessary things in place, that is why he came back to answer to the charges because he wants that out of the way as soon as possible,” the source stated.

Although the party executive continues to throw its “full support and confidence” with the current leader Lennox Linton, reports are that, when he decides to relinquish the post of leader of the party, whoever takes over will have the unanimous support of everyone.

“The party is not without leaders, Dr. Fontaine has always been earmarked as a potential leader of the party so if that is the popular wish of the people then so be it,” the source said.

However, when contacted for comments on the matter, the President of the UWP Isaac Baptiste said that was news to him. “I am hearing this for the first time and I am not aware of any meeting held with Dr. Fontaine concerning the leadership of the party,” he said.

“What I can say to you, is that within the UWP there are numerous persons with leadership potential and Dr. Fontaine is certainly one of them,” Baptiste told NIN via telephone.

  1. What is wrong with dat?
That is actually a progressive move for the party.
    What is a failed election?
In his first stint as leader of UWP the party went from 3 to, 6 seats in parliament…be fair!!!
Any political party in government that hangs unto one leader for an excessive amount of time will commit certain errors that the party will NEVER be able to fix until it changes leadership.
For a man of Thompson Fontaine character considering his professional engagement in south Sudan…….we welcome dat international hero of nature island……… that can only be quite fitting.
UWP through it’s leader Lennox Linton and a forward thinking executive is recognizing the distinguished qualities of thus son of the soil……..his mark will resonate in Dominica history.
    Welcome Dr Thompson Fontaine.
I doubt that Skerrit could leave office now and get an assignment of that nature by the EU nor UN…… Putin wouldn’t even hire Roosevelt Skerrit!!!!!

  2. Leaders come and go, no position is eternal. In all democratic organizations, that’s how it works. Anyone who wants to remain leader for life is not in the interest of the people and has no good intentions.

    • In a democratic country sure leaders come and go as long as you are elected or rejection by the populace . And if the leader of a party is not forthcoming and of course the party will always want a promising leading and also if a leader of a country is not progressing and meeting the demands of it’s voters they will definitely want him to be voted out,But sorrry to disappoint you i’m not seeing this with the leasership of the DLP party and it’s voters ….As long as the people will elect the pm he can stay in power as long as he likes unlesss he decides to steps down…And by the way are you sure you are a kalinago ? Because the last time i visted the kalinago territory i’ve saw great improvements done by the DLP…..The problem with our people is that we are to ungrateful and except government to do and give us help in everything and simply things we can make sacrifices and do for ourselves.

  3. The uwp needs a savior. Dominica needs a savior. That press conference needs to occur, urgently

  4. Doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result is insane, if we really care about the people, true democracy, embrace change,
Mr Linton contribution is appreciated, the time have come, when he must put country first, leadership is everything.
