Justin Simon QC calls for unity as lawyers

Former attorney general of Antigua & Barbuda, Dominican born Justin Simon QC is calling on Caribbean lawyers to come together in the spirit of cooperation and understanding.

He made his comments in an exclusive interview with Nature Isle News (NIN) as he reflected on the death of his colleague and friend Michael “Mikey” Bruney who passed away last week with cancer.

“I think that whilst we recognize that everything around us is not going on as we would like, there needs to be more understanding, cooperation, more sport among each other,” Simon SC stated.

He continued, “I think it is very important and necessary for our own development and advancement because, far too often, we sometimes take incidents much too seriously and I may even add that the politics of the Caribbean is becoming very divisive.”

“We as professional and educated persons and persons who have a reach for the common man needs to know and understand that it takes a community to build us…but it was said once a village makes us that binds us together and we need to remember that to try and give as much cooperation as possible,” he said.

According to Simon who is a well-respected Caribbean jurist, lawyers must understand that even when they find themselves at loggerheads with each other and make it a personal issue and don’t share ideas with the person and don’t talk to the person in an understanding manner that should never be the case.

He believes that now more than even, lawyers should bind together as one even in the “politically charged environment.”
