With all sports brought to a sudden but expected halt because of the COVID -19 pandemic, one sporting organization has sounded its intention to take to the field.
The Windsor Park Sports Stadium will come alive when the Dominica Cricket Association (DCA) stages two matches at the end of June.
The staging of the matches will serve as a dress rehearsal for the cricket pitches which are currently being prepared. The square, as it is called, was recently dug up as a new surface was relayed all in preparation for the international series involving the West Indies and New Zealand in July 2020.
Public Relations Officer of the Dominica Cricket Association, Augustine Pascal has indicated that the dates for the international matches will have to be looked at again.
“Well basically, it is part of the plan for the stadium preparation for the international games that were scheduled for Dominica in July. Obviously, the dates of these games will have to be rescheduled as a result of the global pandemic, COVID-19. So the management at the stadium wanted to test the relayed pitches and they reached out to the DCA to be part of the exercise.
“We thought it was a perfect opportunity to have our senior men’s national training squad to be involved in these two games on June 27th and 28th. The games may well be 50 overs per side, but that is still to be confirmed. With regards to the teams that will be playing, this is being put together by the head coach and will be announced closer to the scheduled dates of the matches,” Pascal explained.
The national team’s training program had to be put on hold owing to the COVID-19 pandemic which brought all sports to a standstill. The relayed pitches will certainly give a clear indication as to what kind of assistance will be offered to batsmen or bowlers. Traditionally, the pitches at the Windsor Park have had a little for those who were prepared to bend their backs and put down their heads.
