The Dominica Cricket Academy, which rose to prominence in early May 2020, will be under new management in the not too distant future.
According to information from the Dominica Cricket Association (DCA), the existing Board of the Dominica Cricket Academy has been dissolved and all the members have been written to, informing them of the decision which was taken on 30th June 2020 by the parent body.
A comprehensive plan to restructure cricket on the island has been advanced as the main reason behind the dissolution of the Board.
The Dominica Cricket Academy, which was inaugurated in 2014, served as a nursery for budding cricketers. At the Academy, the student-athletes would be engaged in several cricketing drills such as fielding, bowling, and batting. They were also taught life skills.
To date, the Academy has graduated several cricketers who have gone on to represent the island at various levels. The most notable graduate of the Academy is Alick Athanaze, who has gone on to play first-class cricket.
Despite the absence of the Board, the operations of the Academy will continue according to an official of the Dominica Cricket Association.
The Dominica Cricket Academy came into the spotlight in May 2020 after a Cricket West Indies audit report revealed that US$134 000 destined for cricket development in Dominica, was channeled through Cricket West Indies.
Leaked portions of the auditors report asserted that CWI provided no documentary evidence or confirmation from the DCA that the funds, which were paid over to the DCA in three tranches, were used as directed.
However, officials of the Dominica Cricket Association have indicated that all the necessary documentation associated with the use of the funds were being sent to CWI.
