Stay safe, stay strong, and may we emerge from this experience with renewed determination-NYCD President Phael Lander

RE: Statement from the National Council of Dominica to Dominican Youth Ahead of Tropical Storm Bret
Dear Dominican Youth,
We write to you today with a sense of urgency and responsibility as we brace ourselves for
the approaching threat of Tropical Storm Bret. Every one of us must take this storm seriously and prioritize our safety and well-being.
Tropical storms are unpredictable and can bring about devastating consequences.
Therefore, we urge you to remain vigilant and prepared throughout this period. Our safety as youth is of paramount importance, and we implore you to follow the guidelines and
instructions provided by the authorities.
Here are some essential steps you should take:
Stay Informed: Stay tuned to reliable sources of information such as local news updates,
radio broadcasts, and official weather advisories. Be aware of any evacuation orders or
emergency plans put forth by reliable authorities.
Prepare an Emergency Kit: Assemble a basic emergency kit that includes essential
supplies such as non-perishable food, water, a first aid kit, flashlights, batteries, important
documents, and any necessary medications. Ensure that your kit is readily accessible.
Secure Your Property: Take proactive measures to secure your homes and surroundings.
Clear out any debris or loose objects that could potentially become projectiles in high winds.
Trim tree branches, secure windows, and reinforce doors if and where necessary.
Communication Plan: Establish a communication plan with your family and loved ones.
Designate a safe meeting place and ensure everyone knows how to contact each other in
case of separation. Keep your mobile devices charged and conserve battery life as much as
possible.
Evacuation Measures: If evacuation orders are issued, DO NOT delay. Follow the
instructions provided by local authorities and proceed to the designated evacuation shelters
or areas. Remember to carry your emergency kit and important documents along with you.
Support One Another: During challenging times, we must stand together as a united
nation. Offer assistance to those in need, particularly the elderly, differently-abled, or
vulnerable individuals. Small acts of kindness can make a significant difference.
We understand that these circumstances may be overwhelming, but we should have faith in
our resilience and strength as Dominican youth. By being proactive, prepared, and united,
we can effectively mitigate the impact of Tropical Storm Bret and emerge from it stronger
than ever.
Please remember to prioritize your safety and the safety of others. Take care of yourselves,
stay connected with your loved ones, and remain hopeful as we navigate through this
challenging period. Together, we will overcome this storm and rebuild our beautiful nation.
Stay safe, stay strong, and may we emerge from this experience with renewed
determination.
