Weather Outlook for Dominica and the Lesser Antilles
Valid from: 8:00 AM on Monday, July 1, 2024
Hurricane Beryl will be the dominant feature affecting the area today. As a result, increased cloudiness with pockets of light to moderate showers which could be heavy at times, and strong gusty winds can be expected. A flood watch is now in effect for Dominica until 6 pm today. People in areas prone to flooding, landslides, and falling rocks are advised to be alert and exercise caution. A flood watch means that flash flooding is possible during the period.Â
The presence of dust haze is expected to be maintained over the next few days. People with respiratory sensitivities are advised to take the necessary precautions to avoid complications.
Moderate to very rough seas can be expected in open water with waves peaking near 12ft today. Small craft operators are advised to remain in port. Sea bathers are advised to stay out of the water.
Tropical Storm Watch has been discontinued and a flood watch is in effect for Dominica. Beryl regains category 4 hurricane status.
At 8 am, the center of Hurricane Beryl was located near latitude 12.0 North, longitude 60.5 West about 240 miles south of Dominica. Beryl is moving toward the west-northwest away from Dominica near 20 mph. A continued quick westward to west-northwestward motion is expected during the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have again increased to 130 mph with higher gusts. Beryl is again a dangerous category 4 hurricane and will continue to move across the southern Windward into the Caribbean Sea later today.
Interests in Dominica should continue to exercise caution due to increased rainfall, high winds, and rough seas due to the presence of Beryl. Â
Meanwhile, an area of low pressure in the Central Tropical Atlantic is being monitored and expected to approach the area by Wednesday. Residents are advised to monitor the progress of this system.
