ROSEAU, Dominica, Jun 1, CMC – Senior officials of the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) are condemning what they describe as “a sustained campaign of ‘misinformation, character assassination and political persecution” against them.
The officials, including former prime minister Edison James and former opposition leader Lennox Linton, wrote in their May 31, 2026, letter that the campaign has been ongoing for the past two years.
In their open letter addressed to “Fellow Members and Supporters” and signed by former legislators, Danny Lugay, Ezekiel Bazil, and Hector John, the opposition officials said that anonymous social media accounts, fake profiles, and self-appointed defenders of the current leadership have sought to portray us as enemies of the party we helped build, strengthen, and sustain over decades of sacrifice and service.
They said they have been labelled “troublemakers, hindrances, washed-up candidates…and even accused of plotting the defeat” of the party.
“The latest and most disturbing development is the public call for our expulsion from the party, “By FORCE if possible,” the group said in the letter, adding that “this dangerous and reckless language is completely inconsistent with the democratic traditions and values upon which the United Workers Party was founded”.
They warn that no political party that aspires to govern a democratic nation “can tolerate threats of force against members branded as disloyal for holding independent opinions, offering constructive criticism and asking simple questions about leadership decisions and directions”.’
The group said that they wanted to make their position very clear and that they have never worked against the party, supported any other, and that “the allegations being circulated against us are entirely false.
“We are not preventing the selection of winning candidates; we are not undermining the National Executive Committee(and) we are not interfering in the day-to-day running of the Party,” they wrote.
“We remain fully committed to the success of the United Workers Party because we firmly believe it is the only credible and organized political force capable of providing the people of Dominica with an alternative government,” the letter stated.
In the three-page letter, the group said that the challenges facing Dominica “are too serious, the stakes are too high, and the hopes of too many citizens depend on the existence of a strong, united and credible alternative government”.
The UWP is led by former International Monetary Fund (IMF) economist, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, who was first elected to the position on November 27, 2022, succeeding Linton.
