Roseau, Dominica: The Nigeria Dominica Association (NDA), an umbrella organization that serves as the primary voice for the Nigerian community in Dominica, is gearing up to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1st, 2023, in a grand and symbolic fashion.

The event which will take center stage this weekend promises to be a testament to the deep sense of patriotism, unity, and cultural heritage that bind the Nigerian community in Dominica together.

Nigeria’s Independence Day holds immense historical significance as it marks the day in 1960 when the country gained its independence from British colonial rule. It signifies the birth of a nation and the beginning of a journey towards self-determination, self-governance, and self-identity.

The occasion is further dedicated to the memorial of the country’s heroes who fought for independence the likes of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and others.

Over the years, Nigeria has grown into a diverse, culturally rich, and influential nation on the global stage. For Nigerians both at home and abroad, this day serves as a reminder of their shared history and the achievements made since independence.

President of the NDA, Pastor Longinus Ohaegbu, emphasized that while the primary aim of the celebration is to join Nigeria in commemorating its hard-fought independence, it also serves as a significant platform for Nigerians to unite, strengthen bonds, and cultivate a profound sense of togetherness, as well as showcase their culture to the Dominica public.

“This day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for Nigeria’s freedom,” Pastor Ohaegbu expressed. “We also recognize the Nigerians sons and daughters who have represented Nigeria very well in Dominica, by using their expertise, and professionalism to impact our host country Dominica positively.”

The NDA’s President further averred that the event serves as a platform to explore avenues for strengthening ties and cooperation between Nigeria and Dominica, acknowledging the longstanding diplomatic relations between the two nations.

“We are aware that Nigeria and Dominica have come a long way in bilateral relationships; we intend to discover how we can enhance this relationship,” he stated.

This year’s Independence Day celebration will feature several noteworthy activities, including a Keynote Address on the topic “Nigeria Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” to be delivered by Dr. Justin Fadipe, Chief Executive Officer and Surgeon of the Justin Fadipe Centre Mero, Dominica.

In addition, the Minister of National Security and Legal Affairs, Honorable Rayburn Blackmoore, will deliver a speech on “Enhancing Bilateral Relations between Nigeria and Dominica” and will also preside over the ceremony for the presentation of awards to five outstanding sons and daughters of Nigeria residing in Dominica who have achieved distinction in various fields of endeavor.

Furthermore, attendees can look forward to captivating cultural dances, engaging comedy performances, and compelling drama presentations as part of the festivities.
