Former Antigua PM Sir Lester Bryant Bird dies

According to reports reaching Nature Isle News (NIN), Sir Lester passed away this morning (Aug 9, 2021) at the age of 83. He held the office of Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda (1994–2004). Bird was Antigua’s second prime minister.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne described Bird as a “great son of the soil” who was a distinguished leader. A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said that all flags in the country will now be flown at half-mast. Bird will be accorded a State funeral.

NOTES:

Sir Lester Bryant Bird, KNH was the second Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda from 1994 to 2004 and a well-known athlete. He was chairman of the Antigua Labour Party from 1971 to 1983, then became Prime Minister when his father, Sir Vere Bird, the previous Prime Minister, resigned.
