5th formers begin online schooling

Fifth-form students in Dominica begin their new academic year today (September 13, 2021) through online learning because of the COVID-19 surge in Dominica.

According to Education Minister Octavia Alfred, the process today, is to engage all students in the next few weeks. “Our fifth formers begin classes online the official start of their learning for the 2021/22 academic year in an uncertain period when Dominica is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases,” she said.

She revealed that this has necessitated the full review of how the students will be engaged in teaching and learning.

“While classes have been delayed for the rest of the school population, our fifth formers begin their lessons with the online learning modularity via the Google classroom,” Alfred stated.

She says that she is confident that teachers and school leaders are prepared to take on the challenge with “efficiency and skills” and with the support of the Ministry of Education the learning of the students will be of high quality.

“I encourage our students to approach their learning with determination despite the obvious differences and limitations which exist with online learning,” Alfred stated.

The Education Minister said that her ministry knows that the students “can do well” because they have proven so in the past and have the capacity to adjust and excel even when faced with challenges.

She wished the students well and thanked the parents and teachers for there “cooperation and patience” in the matter.
