Veteran calypsonian arrested on sexual matters

A veteran calypsonian in Dominica is now on remand at the Stock Farm Prison after he failed to put up bail after he was arrested and charged on allegations of sexual activities with a minor girl.

Under the provisions of the Sexually Offences Act, we are prohibited from publishing the name of the individual concerned in the matter.

Under Section 38 (1) of the Sexually Offences Act, “after a person is charged with an offense under this Act, any matter that is likely to lead members of the public as the complainant, or as the accused with that charge shall not be published in a written publication or to be broadcast…”

Section 38 (2) states that “a person who publishes any matter in contravention of subsection (1) is guilty of an offense and liable to a fine of fifty thousand thousand or to imprisonment for three years.”

The individual appeared in court where the charge was read to him, the prosecution did not object to bail.
