Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) statement on May Day 2023

The Dominica Freedom Party(DFP) joins with workers at all levels in the Commonwealth of Dominica, in solidarity as we observe and celebrate Labour Day Monday, May 1, 2023.

The significance of this day, urges workers to remain mindful of their role in building a strong, productive and just society amidst the many challenges confronting our country as we continue to strive for a fair days work for a fair days pay. It is also a day that symbolizes our freedom and democracy, as well as the capacity of all of us (workers) to be able to organize ourselves, to express our opinion and to be able to defend our rights and to make sure that our organizations are also able to do so.

While we recognizes the importance of employers from both the public and private sectors in employment creation, we strongly appreciate the important role played by workers and that of the trade union movement in meeting the development objective of building a prosperous nation.

There is dignity in work. Be proud in what you do, your country is better because of you. Without workers there would be no nation. Workers lay the building blocks of every nation. You matter!

The worker and trade union movement should also be respected and given their space to continue to play their part in nation building with a strong and independent Labour Division working together to maintain a positive industrial relations climate in our beloved country.

The Dominica Freedom Party appeal to all workers in Dominica to be steadfast, work fairly, be productive, be innovative and always strive for excellence, and also urges employers to deal fairly with their employees.

The Dominica Freedom Party wishes also to use this opportunity as we observe May Day 2023 to remember and salute some of Dominican trade union stalwarts who have gone to the great beyond; Mr. E. C Loblack (the founding father of the Labour movement) Mr. Louis Benoit, Mr. Kertist Augustus, Mr. Anthony Frederick Joseph, Ms. Federlin Moulon, Mr. Alick Gage and Mr. John Alexis. To name a few.

DFP wishes Happy International Workers’ Day/May Day to all the workers in Dominica, the Region and around the globe.
