Pointe Michel remembers those who perished during Hurricane Maria

The community of Pointe Michel is still in “shock” three years after the passage of Hurricane Maria on September 18, 2017.

That southern community lost 17 of its members including a family of seven (7) all swept away from the raging waters of the Siboulie Ravine.

On September 20, 2020, dubbed “La Salette Sunday” as villagers celebrated the patron feast of Our Lady of La Salette, pilgrims went to the momentum where candles were lite and three wreaths laid in honour of the 17 who perished.

The monument was erected by the Global Association an organization formed to commemorate that event.

Local representative Roanna Joseph who chaired the brief function where the monument with the names of those who perished in the Siboulie Ravine says September 18, 2017, is very difficult to forget in the community of Pointe Michel.

“Every year on this date, it is no doubt that emotions are all over, and though many of us try to forget what took place that night it is very difficult to forget. We must remember all those who called out for help and were never heard and those and never got a chance to cry out for help and were swept away.

To date, many of our family members are still missing and so we must remember them and pay respect to them,” Joseph said.

Confirmed dead are Royston Toussaint, Murray Delmore, Veronica Peltier and Glen Alexander.

Missing are Randolph Randy Charles, Philipson Renault, Ann Lanquedoc, Morian Lanquedoc, Nadora Williams, Garvin Francis, Jerome Daniel, Jayalia Lawrence, Gertain Daniel, Edith Charles- Fontaine, Nashon Attidore, Darry Grove, and Joanne Francis.
