Premier Division championship title thrown wide open

Newly promoted football club WE United FC has scored a major victory in their quest to capture the Dominica Football Association (DFA) Premier Division League.

In the latest Premier Division fixture on Friday at the Benjamin Park in Portsmouth, WE United FC avenged their first-round defeat when they defeated league leaders and defending champions Sagicor South East FC.

In the first round of competition, the defending champions had defeated WE United FC by four goals to one. However, the newcomers got their revenge with a two goals to nil victory.

Al Jno Baptiste gave his club a one goal to nil lead heading into the interval. However, it was the second half strike of fifteen-year-old Roosevelt Coipel who sealed the deal for his club en route to securing that all-important victory.

Despite the loss, the defending champions will still remain in first place after the fourth round of matches. The win pushes WE United to 23 points and in the second position, four points behind the defending champions.

Meanwhile, the Premier Division action will continue on Saturday with a doubleheader at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium. In the first match of the day, Promex Harlem United will do battle against the struggling Exodus FC from 2 pm. In the afternoon’s second encounter, LA Enterprises Bombers FC will square off against Belfast Estate Mahaut Soca Strikers FC from 4 pm.

On Sunday, former champions Central Cooperative Credit Union LTD Dublanc FC will take on East Central FC from 2 pm in the first encounter of the doubleheader. The other matchup will feature Petro Caribe Pointe Michel FC and Happi Bath Estate FC from 4 pm.

In the Division One League, Sagicor South East FC will take on Calibishie Diasporas FC from 4 pm at the Castle Bruce Playing Field in a Group 2 encounter on Saturday.

On Sunday, in one of two games carded, BAA Sharks FC will take on WE United FC at the Castle Bruce Playing Field in a Group 2 matchup, while at the Newtown Savannah Mahuat United FC will take on Exodus FC in Group 1. Both matches will begin at 4 pm
