Skerrit said the rights of Mehul Choski in Dominica will be respected

Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt has issued his first public statement in the ongoing saga involving Indian fugitive 62-year-old Mehul Choski who arrived in Dominica on May 23, 2021, via Antigua where he has been residing since 2018 under a cloud of uncertainties.

Mr. Choski acquired Antiguan citizenship via the CBI programme and is wanted in India on 11 fraud charges valued at US two billion dollars.

Since his arrival in Dominica, he has been under heavy police guard and has since been charged for illegal entry a charge which carries a penalty of EC$5,000.00.

He has pleaded “not guilty” to the charge and denied bail but because of his health conditions is a patent at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital in the capital city Roseau. The matter is set for trial on June 14, 2021.

Prime Minister Skerrit said “the rights of Mehul Choski will be respected.”

“The matter with this Indian citizen is before the courts, the courts will decide what happens to the gentleman and we will allow the court process to go through, I do not like to get involve by making public statements in these matters,” Skerrit said.

“His rights will be respected as has been done thus far and let the court decide what will happen. We have no issues in so far as the matter relates to Antigua and or India, we are part of our own community and we must recognize our duties and responsibilities in this regard.”

Choski will appear in court today for a review of his health conditions as stipulated by the court. His lawyers have filed an application on his behalf for bail which will be heard on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, before High Court Judge Bernie Stephenson.
