Increase in Salaries for Public Officers

Over 2900 public officers will this month see an increase in their salaries.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made the announcement at a press conference on Monday.

“I am pleased to announce that as of this month, September, the new salary structure approved by the Cabinet will come into effect. Under the new structure, salaries for employees at all levels will be increased with the exception of Level I, which remains unchanged.

“This means that just over 2,940 public officers will benefit from the new salary structure in this first phase resulting in an overall increase of 6.0 percent; with some officers benefitting from up to 13 percent increase in salaries,” the Prime Minister said.

The measure is based on recommendations from the completed Organizational Review and Reclassification of the Public Service.

Prime Minister Skerrit said the new salary structure will result in an increase in the Government’s wage bill by an estimated $9 million annually and would benefit a number of essential workers.

“We are talking about many of our essential service providers; our teachers and principals, police officers, fire officers, doctors, nurses, environmental health officers, and others who serve on the frontline of the public sector; providing key services to members of the public at critical times,” he said.

“I am pleased that from this month-end these public officers and their families will be better off and better able to take care of their commitments. Again, this reflects this Government’s policy to do all it can, even in a difficult economic period, to improve the lives of citizens,” he added.
