Ashma McDougall will be the DLP’s candidate for Roseau North in the pending by-Election

ROSEAU, DOMINICA, JUNE 16, 2026- It’s now official, as the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has ratified businesswoman, educator, and economist Ashma McDougall, former President of the National Youth Council of Dominica (NYCD), as its candidate for the Roseau North constituency, following the resignation of Miriam Blanchard due to health reasons.

According to a DLP press release, that decision was “unanimously approved by the party’s National Executive Committee on Monday, June 15, 2026. McDougall’s nomination was unopposed by the DLP’s Roseau North Constituency Association.

The party expressed its gratitude to Miriam Blanchard for her years of dedicated service to the people of Roseau North and Dominica and extended its best wishes for her recovery.

McDougall, a native of Bath Estate who currently resides in Goodwill, described her selection as “both an honour and a humbling experience.”

“I am humbled and honoured by the vote of confidence reposed in me by the Dominica Labour Party, the Roseau North Constituency Association, and the many constituents who have encouraged me to step forward at this important time,” she stated.

“I do not take this responsibility lightly. Roseau North is a constituency rich in talent, resilience, and potential. I am committed to listening, learning, and working alongside the people of the constituency to help create opportunities, strengthen communities, and deliver meaningful results.”

An economist, entrepreneur, and youth advocate, McDougall has held several leadership positions, including President of the National Youth Council of Dominica and Executive Director of the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce (DAIC). Her work in youth development, entrepreneurship, and economic advancement has earned recognition both nationally and regionally.

Prime Minister and Political Leader of the Dominica Labour Party, Roosevelt Skerrit, endorsed McDougall’s candidacy, stating, “It reflects the party’s commitment to attracting capable, energetic, and forward-thinking individuals who are prepared to contribute to national development.”

With a by-election constitutionally due within 90 days, Prime Minister Skerrit said the party’s supporters are “energized and ready to begin campaigning.”

“Further details regarding the campaign will be announced over the weekend,” he said.
