A former Attorney General of Dominica has been engaged by the government of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to review the Bail Act and the Firearm and Ammunition Act.
Anthony Laronde held the post of Attorney General from 1995-2000 during the United Workers Party (UWP) government is also a former Magistrate in Dominica and also a qualified legal draftman.
At a press conference held on September 28, 2023, Minister of National Security Rayburn Blackmoore revealed that the government has retained the services of Mr. Laronde, to “look at the relevant laws in the country inclusive of the Firearm and Bail Act, to ensure that the laws as sanctioned, conforms with the Constitution.”
“So that when you are caught, the sentence imposed by the Court must be relevant to the crime and laws,” he said.
Minister Blackmoore also stated that a new unit has been formed to look into the trafficking of firearms in the country. “An investigative unit has been formed to investigate matters relating to illicit trafficking of firearm and ammunition components into the country.”
This Unit he stated shall comprise the Police, Customs and Financial Investigating Unit (FIU).
