St. Joseph man slapped with gun-related offences

Jevie Mason of St. Joseph who resides in Shawford is now on remand at the State Prison in Stock Farm pending a bail application by his lawyer Dawn Yearwood Stewart.

Mason appeared before Chief Magistrate Candia Carette George where a charge of possession of a 9mm Taurus firearm, and possession of 12 rounds of ammunition without being the holder of a firearm and ammunition license was read to him.

He was also slapped with resisting arrest, assault on police, and battery on police. The incidents took place in Copthall on May 2, 2024.

The prosecution told the court that while bail was at the discretion of the court, they were still objecting to bail on the grounds of the prevalence of gun-related offenses and also the prevalence of unlicensed firearms in the country.

However, his lawyer in response told the court her client does not have anything pending against him and in any event, they were not ready to make a bail application.

The matter was adjourned to September 12, 2024, and disclosure was to be made on or before July 31, 2024.

A date for his bail application was not set.
