Tribute & Message of Condolences on the Passing of Arthur Smith, a Friend, and Trade Union Colleague
To the Family, Friends, and Trade Union Colleagues of Arthur Smith,
It is with a sadden and heavy heart that my family and I, extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Arthur Smith, a former Union Leader and CSA General Secretary, a dear friend, and a respected colleague. Arthur’s departure has left an indelible void in our hearts and the labor movement, as well as in the civic community of Dominica.
Arthur Smith was a stalwart in the field of labor advocacy, dedicating his life to the fight for workers’ rights and social justice. His tenure as CSA General Secretary was marked by his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of countless workers, advocating for fair wages, better working conditions, and the dignity of labor. His leadership was not just about negotiations and policies; it was about the profound belief that every worker deserved respect and fair treatment.
Following his stint as CSA General Secretary, he continued to advocate on behalf of workers in his capacity as a senior labor officer at the Labor Division.
Arthur’s passion for his work was evident to all who had the privilege of working alongside him. His colleagues remember him as a beacon of integrity, a source of unwavering support, and a mentor who was always willing to share his vast knowledge and experience. His strategic thinking, coupled with his compassionate approach, earned him the respect and admiration of both peers and adversaries.
Beyond his professional achievements, Arthur was a true friend. He had an infectious enthusiasm for life, a kind word for everyone, and a heart that was always open. His sense of humor and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life made him a beloved figure in our community. He was a long-standing member of the then Siffleur Montagne Chorale, later the Sisserou Singers Chorale, an avid member of his church choir, a scout, a teacher at the Roseau Boys School, as well as having served as a volunteer in several capacities on committees and the board of the then Roseau Cooperative Credit Union.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the remarkable legacy he leaves behind. Arthur’s contributions to the labor movement and his wider community have paved the way for future generations of union leaders and activists. His spirit of determination, fairness, and kindness will continue to inspire us all.
To Arthur’s family, we extend our heartfelt sympathy. We share in your sorrow and hope that you find solace in the memories of the remarkable man he was. Please know that his work and his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may we all find comfort in knowing that the world is better because of Arthur. With deepest sympathy,
Alvin Thomas, Former CSA General Secretary
